After a very tough group ride on Saturday, I finally had a chance to ride the tandem with Niki on Sunday morning.
After a few minutes to get accustomed to a different groupo, and a couple of mounts and dismounts to make sure we could safely maneuver the bike we were ready to go.
What can I say? Of course, the bike is pleasantly fast on the flats. What I hadn’t anticipated or remembered was how impervious it seemed we were to headwinds. I could feel the wind in my face and hear it in my ears, but we seemed to just punch through it. We’ve yet to do any climbing, but I’m sure we’ll be fine.
The ride qualities of this bike really amazed me. Of course I can detect some lateral flexing, as is to be expected with such a long structure, but it is less than I had anticipated and handling is very predictable. Maybe it’s the bigger tires than I am used to, maybe it’s the length of the wheelbase, maybe the steel construction, or maybe all three, but the ride is positively luxurious. It is like driving a limousine – in a GOOD way. That Brooks saddle feels like it was made for this bike. I can see racking up some serious miles on this machine.
Thanks again for building such a beautiful machine. We look like a million bucks and I can’t wait to develop our tandem skills. It will be a fun learning experience.
